Super-granular references are, nevertheless, a good thing -- but
they don't have to be in the user's face. We can number in the
visible headings down to, say, two levels. Thereafter the numbering
might continue parenthetically (and as meta-data), at the end of
significant passages.
There's a difference between a document's full hierarchy *in fact*
and how hard we beat folks over the head with it. Structure and
elegance aren't necessarily at odds.
