Hi Kathleen,

I write proposals for both grants and contracts, and agree with what Dick has said. I have not heard of ICI, but there are many good grant-writing workshops around. The most notable of these are the workshops given by the Grantsmanship Center and The Foundation Center.

However, while some of the procedures are the same for both for-profit and non-profit organizations, you will end up paying for a lot of information that isn't relevant to the for-profit environment.

If you're going to be working for a for-profit company and you want to get some proposal writing training, you might want to see if you can find one of the low-cost proposal workshops that are sponsored by the Small Business Administration's Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) and by the Department of Defense Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs). Each of these centers have local and/or regional offices that frequently give inexpensive workshops on proposal development and other subjects. Many are given at nearby community colleges and similar venues.

The most recent posting in my blog contains a little more background about these centers.

There are also a number of well-known companies that provide proposal workshops geared to the for-profit sector. Here are a few of them:

While there are many informative books on the subject, a good workshop will give you some hands-on experience as well as the all-important context.

Kind Regards,
Deborah
