Well, I moved from a contract at a large firm to a contract at a small
firm and I just want to say my mileage has varied. I'm reading the
descriptions of autonomy, appreciation, and respect some have
experienced at small companies with some feeling of longing.
I do have the shorter commute though, and that's worth a lot to me.
But I will say that not all small firms have similar cultures. Before
you move, it might be nice to have a few interviews on site to "feel
out" the relationships. You may find out later that even in a small
company there are politics and adversarial relationships between
"departments" that induce tension. A lone technical writer can be a bit
vulnerable in such cases.
