It seems to me that it depends on who the manuals are intended for.
I think the arguement could be made that for a videogame intended
for use by highschoolers, a user guide written by other highschoolers
could conceivably be more user-friendly than one written by some
middle-aged person such as me who hasn't touched a videogame
since Frogger (just make sure the kids are taught to use spellchecker
and someone else is editing to correct their worst grammar errors).
On the other hand, you probably wouldn't want the kids writing the
service manuals or the manufacturing sheets for the consoles (do 
they even service these things anymore, or are the entire guts of the
units potted in resin?).

Talk about New Math. You'll spend millions of dollars developing some
breakthrough gizmo, but won't spring for somebody to rewrite your
manual in proper English? I know some high schoolers who'd do the job
for $50 and 10 free ring tones.
