There is possibly one difference: one gets to
know people who write on techwr-l, and know what
to expect and how to take it.

We have our own opinions, assumptions, and
prejudices about those people - we are entitled
to those (nor can we help holding them).

Sure those articles on wiki are written by real
people, and if we see several of their articles -
and we know some of the topics with authority -
then we can form a prejudice about their level of
ignorance or knowledge too.

We don't usually run into the same 'author'
often; that is the likely difference?
