True. But programs, OSs, and Hardware are all interdependant.
Some times the value of "progress" can be debatable, but change is
unavoidable. The day that no hardware can be found to run the OS on which
your critical program depends, tough.
Before then, you better have contingency plans. Virtual machines seem
great for critical applications. Set one up with only the required OS and
apps for one given purpose. Then no conflicts with other programs, and
whether or not the hardware and primary OS are those that were originally
required is meaningless.
Look at it from another perspective. A Model T could still serve perfectly
for your daily commute. But do you expect Ford to continue making parts,
gas companies to continue offering lead-additive gasoline, and the rest of
traffic to slow down, so that you can continue to drive your antique?
