This isn't really a "problem" with the new tech communicator, but rather
with the unsupportive manager. You shouldn't hire less experienced
contributors if you aren't prepared to make a commitment to mentoring
them.

The challenge presented by inexperienced hires (I prefer to call it a
challenge; it isn't a problem unless you are unsuccessful in meeting it)
is to educate them in the ways of the world outside of academia in a
way that helps them to understand the inevitable compromises that
real world pressures such as cost and deadlines will require them to
make in the blue-sky ideas that they've learned in school without
disillusioning them to the point that they just join the parade and
march along in lock-step without even trying to offer up anything
new and innovative that they may have gleaned from their teachers.

The biggest "problem" with new tech communicators is that managers
don't spend the time and energy up-front to properly train them. They
are coming from academia, which more than not teaches in a "the sky's
the limit" manner where time and resources are unlimited and the
emphasis is on "proper" work. Without guidance, new techcommers will
hold to these ideals and be unproductive and will question or
circumvent the existing manual of style. They are green, and need
constant care and supervision to properly grow their roots in your
organization.
