Two competing recruiting firms. I've had situations where I was getting resumes from four different staffing agencies.
Do you think they submit you to companies for free? You don't care about their commission, but believe me, THEY do.
They build their reputation by sending companies candidates who get hired.

Here's another question that seems to have popped up more these days
whenever I first discuss a job:
"Have you submitted yourself to any other jobs?"
Also, they need to know if you are working with any other recruiters. If
two or more recruiters submit candidates for the same job (yes, it
happens), they need to know which one gets the commission. The recruiter
wants to avoid a situation where your resume was submitted by a competitor
and by them as well.

Um...what? [drinks more coffee]. Are you referring to two recruiters within
the same company? If not, then I don't understand. Recruiters are always
in competition with one another. They build their reputations by sending
companies the better candidates.

They probably also want an idea of whether you might take yourself out of the candidate pool by accepting a job for which they will not receive a commission, or by turning down a job they find for you.

See "um...what?" above. What do I care if they receive a commission or not?
Are you saying that recruiters who receive a commission work harder for the
candidate?
