Here's how I prefer to do list numbering:
* I use LISTNUM whenever possible.
* If I need hierarchies, I use AUTONUMLGL.
* If I need parallel numbering systems, I use SEQ.

In other words, I always use the simplest field possible!

For cross-references, I bookmark the number field.
