Not much off-topic :-)
There is a related, much frustrating, problem about
the invisible bookmarks used by Word to build TOCs from
Headings, especially in large docs. After updating a TOC regularly,
invisible bookmarks "pile up" at the headings and will eventually
crash Word.

I read somewhere that this problem may have been cleaned up in recent versions?
Or that the macro is now available with Word???

Just in case, you can run a macro published by Microsoft to fix this.
Afterwards, regenerate all fields in the doc with F9.
Here's the macro code.

Sub StripHiddenBookmarks()
'
' StripHiddenBookmarks Macro
' Macro created 9/15/00 by ...
'
Dim i As Long
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.ShowHidden = True
For i = ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Count To 1 Step -1
If Left$(ActiveDocument.Bookmarks(i).Name, 4) = "_Toc" Then
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks(i).Delete
End If
Application.ActiveDocument.UndoClear
Next i
ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.ShowHidden = False
End Sub

YJ

For starters, turn on the "bookmarks" option on the View tab
of the Tools>Options dialog. That way you'll see the start and
end marks for each bookmark so that you'll be more judicious
about where you place your insertion point when you're editing.
As long as you don't add text between those marks, your
bookmarks should continue to work just fine as you develop and
revise your documents.
