I actually own a scythe, and it's pretty hard to truly hurt yourself with
it. I do occasionally whack the handle into my knee (I would definitely NOT
win the most coordinated geek award!), but I've been using it regularly on
our farm for more than a dozen years, and have only cut myself once (while
sharpening). If you get one, be sure to get the correct blade (grass as
opposed to brush) and get the little handles set correctly for your
height/arm length. A badly adjusted scythe is a formula for "I have to go to
the chiropractor".
As for exercise, farming/gardening is definitely good. Hauling pig food,
mucking out the cow barn, spinning the composter every morning, hauling pig
food, fixing fence, cutting brush, weeding, hauling pig food, moving rocks,
fixing fence, chasing the occasional loose critter, hauling pig food... :)
I have an "elliptical machine" that I bought for $20, but I hardly ever use
it...
I also occasionally engage in the 12-ounce curls alluded to by Al...

Oh, if only...
During the week I do half an hour on the elliptical cross trainer every
morning as soon as I get up (I thought it was incredibly extravagant at
first, but I can't deny the power of having it right in the next room).
During the summer months I tell myself that weekend yardwork counts as
exercise. In particular, if someone made an exercise machine that
mimicked mowing the lawn[1] I'm sure people would be lined up to use it.
Sadly, stress and caffeine do not have wondrous weightloss effects on
me. The opposite, if anything.
A
[1] which I do with a non-powered mower unless the grass has grown
longer[2] than that mower can deal with
[2] whereupon the ideal would be to use a scythe, but they are expensive
and I can be a little clumsy. It just seems like a bad idea.
