Caveat.  The OP's original account brings up two possible 
reasons why the candidate may be unsuitable:

"The interviewing team were exchanging 
gratified smiles till we took the candidate for lunch."

Whose bright idea was it to insert personal politics into an 
*interview lunch* in the first place and by so doing launch
the unpleasant incident?  If it was the candidate, that would
be bad.

"Like it was a given that no one could ever disagree with 
those opinions."

Putting aside the undesirable situation of a working group 
that is engaging in political discussions in a professional 
setting, someone who seems to have difficulty participating 
in a civil discourse in one subject may have the same issue 
in more proper working areas.

I would never penalize a candidate or employee for his/her 
political views.  However, the time, place and manner in 
which a candidate or employee chooses to express those 
views is another matter.
