I think that in a lot of situations, you don't know you're going to be asked
to work 80-hr. weeks until you're already hired and into the job! With all
the cutbacks and layoffs, people are asked to do more and more (like the
work of 2 people), and it gets ridiculous. Even a 60-hr. week, week in, week
out, is ridiculous. Productivity will actually go down.

I agree - for that level of OT (which is ridiculous in any case),
compensatory time is absolutely called for.
