Andrew, thanks for the summary, including a pretty inclusive list of
options. If it's necessary to avoid "master/slave" because it bothers
someone, "superior/subordinate" shows the same relationship. That would
be my pick.

Personally, I don't get too queasy about "master/slave" because it's
just an analogy and a personification--the computer doesn't have
feelings that can be hurt or rights that can be violated. However, what
really matters is whether it offends the *audience.* If it does, it
needs to go.

I would, however, point out that you seem to have the last two items
reversed. (Or did someone catch that the last time this was discussed?)
