It would seem to me to be a good starting point to equip one of the Windows XP users with a copy of WinZip and see if that makes a difference. If it does, then it would make sense to do an analysis of where the difference is in the yield based on the tool used to extract the files.
However, is your storage space so limited that you must use compressed files? Perhaps it might be better to store those files uncompressed. I'm not aware that SharePoint compresses files by default so I'd be disinclined to suspect SharePoint in this situation. If there genuinely is a difference between extracting those files based on the tool used, you're better off eliminating a potential source of grief.
