I usually check salary.com or similar databases to see what the "going" rate is
for an area, then check the COL databases to see what rate is required for
parity with my current location, to see if compensation in that area for the
profession is sufficient to justify a relo. It doesn't make sense to even talk
about moving to a place where I'd need $90k but can only expect an offer in the
$70k range. And there seem to be a lot of places like that these days.
