You don't need a specific booklet tool to design printable booklets. As long
as you can output to PDF.
before you print to PDF, adjust your page margins to something more narrow
than you would usually do, to get to the bleeding edge and you'll be fine.
Print to PDF with Adobe Acrobat or open source PDF Creator.
Now with the version 9.0 of Adobe Acrobat/Reader, when you print, in the
Print dialog, you can select the booklet option .
For even more control, for more pagination controls if you want you can get
the commercial version of Adobe Acrobat.
In most cases for simple booklet prints, Adobat Acrobat Reader's built in
booklet print option in the Print dialog is pretty robust until it becomes
integrated into standard Windows 8 Print dialog boxes.
PS. for printers that fall in the category of 'fancy' they usually have more
robust driver settings that the non-fancy printers don't have. That might be
an option to tweak around and experiment with on recycled paper first,
before the tree hugging green types jump in.

Word 2007 has a booklet layout option... I don't know if it exists in the
Mac world though.

Wrrlers-
I told a local organization that, sure, I'd be happy to put together the
program for their annual auction. I've worked on these before and mistakenly
assumed they would take it to a printer.
However, to save money, they want to use their fancy copier/printer and have
it put the staples in the middle. Somehow, I have to figure out how to get
the pages in the right places so that when they print 8.5 by 11 double-sided
and fold it, it will read in the proper order. I will also have to
accommodate last-minute changes, so I worry that if I carefully figure it
out, some last-minute fantastic item will show up and trash the text flow.
So, what was a simple project has now become one that I am not sure how to
do. (You'd think I would after being a tech writer since the dawn 'o time,
but I haven't encountered this problem.)
I have the following tools: Frame, Pages (Mac), and Word (Mac). I don't have
inDesign.
Does anyone know of an easy way to do this using the tools listed above? Is
there a (free/cheap) add-on that could make my life easier?
Awaiting the collected wisdom of our community....
