It revealed to me words that I mispronounce, and some for which the standard American pronunciation is different. In the case of a few words (like plover) a mispronunciation has become more common than the correct one.
My favorite couplet:
Gertrude, German, wind and wind,
Beau, kind, kindred, queue, mankind,
You cannot know how to pronounce the first line without first having read the second. We know that in computer science as a two-pass algorithm.
