And then there is the attempt to change the rules that fails.  I 
remember when The Washington Post changed its own style manual, which 
it sought to promote as universal, to eliminate the second "e' on 
many words such as trustee and employee.  For a few years afterward, 
the Post wrote of "employes" and "trustes" in their 
newspaper.  Needless to say, the practice never caught on, and 
eventually the Post changed its style manual back to the traditional spellings.
