The major advantage of the automated system is uniformity and speed, but
only if you have a product line in which products are variations on
standardized platforms that mix and match their component parts. For
example, semiconductor chip IP, where different products are created by
selecting different options and settings and then compiling.

If your products involve a lot of one-off custom design work, the automated
system is going to end up making you create lots of little snippets that
will only be used once or twice and you may as well create the docs on the
fly the same as the products.
