While individual members of the team were sometimes more suited to one or
the other, my experience with teams charged with both responsibilities, doc
and training, was good. Documenting in written form and training aren't
exactly the same, but they're also not so very different. The key thing is
to remember the goals of each. The docs were comprehensive, while training
was geared to get people up to initial speed, with training lessons
included on how to find stuff in the docs. Also, training has to be
organized into lessons that need to keep the learners' interest. That
doesn't necessarily mean fun and games, but every lesson had a section
called Why You Need to Know (which for the training developers also
essentially meant, Why Does This Lesson Need to be Included in the Course).
And lessons have to have exercises. In some organizations, they also have
to have some kind of test to measure either outcome or proficiency. But not
all.
