preparing article on tech-writing and free/open source software

Hi, everyone:
Some of you may remember I used to be a regular on this list a number of years
ago. I quit the when I started doing journalism and stopped writing manuals
and help, but now I'm back to make a brief request for help.
I'm preparing an article about technical writing about free and open source
software -- especially Linux -- as a career choice.
Topics I'm interested in include:
- how people get involved in the field
- what people need to succeed in the field
- what relationships to expect with subject matter
- how writing in this field differs from writing about other subjects (or
whether it does)
- anything else that you think might be worth telling people
You can either contact me directly, or else answer on the list. I may use any
comments in the article unless you specifically mark them as being off the
record.
Thanks in advance for any comments that anyone cares to make,
