RE: Default Paragraph Font - Word expertise needed

One suggestion: 

Go to your Normal style (or any style that is causing problems) and open the Paragraph settings for that style. 

Ensure that the checkbox for "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style" is the same for parallel styles in each document.
