It's the check box (not the option!) that is selected or cleared. The option is turned on or off.
Personally, I don't treat the MSTP as gospel truth. But the MSTP's opinion on this is unequivocal.

The option (or whatever) that the checkbox relates to would be selected or cleared, but the check box itself would be checked or unchecked.
This side of the pond it would be ticked or unticked.
