Even though I try to avoid Word whenever possible, I'll suggest one or two tricks. Perhaps they aren't tricks, but instead a set of rules for clean living within Word.

Use styles rather than ad-hoc formatting. Try to agree with others on proper styles. Try to avoid making conflicting styles.

Oh, and don't trust Word's "Master Document" kludge, no matter who tells you that it'll work. Simply avoid it.
