TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I have worked in very large departments and in one-person departments.
One aerospace company where I worked had over 300 technical writers when
I first worked there.
At a couple of places, I was the only person in documentation. I had
to do everything. As a contractor, I have been a one-person department
several times.
Each type of job is a challenge. The main thing is enjoying the work
and trying to do the best I can. I still enjoy my work after over 36
years in the business. Every new project is a new challenge and as
long as I am challenged, it is fun.
Even though this job is medium-sized, about 30 technical writers, I still
work long hours. We are allowed to flex a little and I am a morning
person. I get here about six in the morning and leave about five
in the evening. It does allow me to take a Friday off sometimes to make
a long weekend.
When I quit enjoying my work, I will try to retire. Right now I have
no plans for that.
