One thing I would add is that, regardless of whether exhortations
to politeness are considered rude (a _lot_ depends on the
phrasing: is it "stop calling us names, you rude child!" or
"let's all try to get along here"?), rudeness breeds rudeness:
people who feel insulted are likely to react quickly and
sharply, even if they are otherwise more careful in what they
say (or write, or post). As individuals, about all we can
do is keep an eye out for this tendency in ourselves.
