Hi, all,

I've used the Internet to help me w/ several projects, not the
least being able to access this newsgroup.

1. The Library of Congress gopher is one of many places that
allows access to federal standards: the OSHA regs, DOE Orders,
Occupational descriptions, CFRs, etc. This information is also
available by going through Mosaic
(http://white.nosc.mil/gov.html is the URL for the government
home page).

Gophers are very useful for doing keyword searches.

2. The World Wide Web allows searches by topic, through the
virtual library. I've used this mostly to access reference
files: dictionaries, thesauri, periodic table of element,
jargon files, etc.

3. The different newsgroups provide professional (sometimes)
interaction w/ other people who hold similar interests.

4. File Transfer Protocol allows you to send and receive documents
from different computers. I used FTP to set up my own system
as a "host" so that someone in town could access my files. It
only took about ten minutes for her to get the file she needed.

I also used FTP for this file. I created it in WordPerfect, then
used FTP to save it to my home directory on the network.

5. Archie (which I haven't used except in class) lets you download
different software packages.

Hope this helps. Email me if you want more specific information.
