I find a lot of my contract jobs in the paper. I work mainly for
consulting firms and they advertise regularly and well. I think
that the "hidden job market" thing is mostly for fields where there
isn't a lot of work or for upper level management positions. If
there are only a few jobs in your field, you have to search more
diligently, so perhaps technical writers who live in areas that
have fewer jobs would benefit from those types of techniques.
