Although you may currently have the impression that a full-time job ensures
security, I thought I'd offer an opposing view from my own experience. I've been
in your situation twice, where I decided to make the move from contracting to a
permanent position in search of job security. Needless to say, neither occasion
worked as I had planned.
The first was for a small co. that was on a peak when I joined, and six months
later hit a _big_ valley, letting a good percentage of their salaried staff go.
The second occasion was for a large telecommunications (former Ma Bell) company,
which, as many know, are lately being forced to downsize to compete with the
independents in that industry. Strike two.
The bottom line is that in this day and age, I don't know if the term 'permanent
employment' actually has any meaning. It may seem good now, but two months from
now things could change completely.
FWIW, I'm currently in a full-time, permanent position which I love (if at first
you don't succeed...). Hopefully, this one will last.
