I (and my Mac) routinely exchange Word and FrameMaker documents with
clients and colleagues who use PCs. My Mac can read their DOS and Windows
files/disks directly. I have to give them DOS files on a DOS disk, but
that's easy to do with most modern Macs (anything more recent than a
Classic, I think).

You just give your contractors DOS-formatted disks and ask them to save the
files in Word(DOS) or WordPerfect(DOS). The Mac versions of both these
wordprocessors allow you to save your files in any of a kazillion formats.
My Word(Mac) menu gives me about a dozen PC wordprocessor formats to choose
from. The only hitch is that I can't format DOS disks, and PCs can't read
Mac disks. So I just keep a stock of cheap DOS disks in the drawer, and
that solves the problem.

There's also a package called 'Word for Word' that claims to convert
to/from any Mac or PC format. I haven't bothered with that --- floppies
are considerably less expensive than software!
