I was surprised to find the reaction against the word "prepend."

As a programmer years ago, I was exposed to this word. Although I never
looked it up, I understood it perfectly from the context, and thought it a
succinct expression of meaning.

After the mail on the list, I checked a couple of dictionaries to see if it
was listed. I find that it is a "real" word, listed in Webster's 3rd New
International Dictionary, published in 1981.

The only question left, then, is "is it appropriate to the audience?" I am
not sure that can be determined out of context.
