I thought it meant that the people creating the text were actually
artists in their own right, and when the printing press became
popular those people who were using calligraphy and illumination (and
I guess drawing the illustrations too) were no longer cost effective.
If you've got a monk copying each page, he may as well make it
pretty. But if you're using blocks of type to print the page, you'd
have to call that monk in to illustrate and decorate each page (or
create his own illustrations to be used on the printing press --
something that would add lots of time and expense to the printing).
