Subject:Cost of STC From:Bernice Kieffer <bernice_kieffer -at- MENTORG -dot- COM> Date:Mon, 24 Feb 1997 12:10:29 PST
Hi Everyone:
This is a debate that I find very interesting particularly since I am a former
STC Chapter President. In fact, what I find most astonishing is the cost per
meeting especially for all the big chapters. The chapter I use to be President
of was really small (@65 people at most) and yet we always managed to be able
to provide monthly meetings either totally free of charge or for a nominal fee
of about 2 dollars. The only time we really charged for meetings is if we were
putting on a Seminar or if we had a particullarly famous guest speaker.
Although I had often heard that "people appreciate something more if the pay
for it", it was always my philosophy that we all paid dues and that part of
what we paid dues for was our monthly meetings.
No matter what the monetary cost however, I feel the benifits to me have been
priceless. I have made some good friends through the STC both perfessional and
personal. I have also learned a lot about my chosen profession as well as
myself. I especially enjoy the oppurtunity to be able to share my experiences
with others and hopefully help them in making Technical Writing thier carrer
choice.
Just felt I needed to add my 2 cents.
