In Word 6.0:
Use Word's Heading 1, Heading 2, etc., paragraph styles.
Select Heading Numbering on the Format menu.
A dialog box will open with available numbering options displayed as
thumbnails. Select the one you want (modify if necessary), and click
on OK.
That should do it.
