I have just gone through the EXACT SAME problem, except in Word6.
My solution was this:
1. Use Word 97 to create an html file from the filename.doc file.
I know. You don't want an html file. Hush!
2. In the process of the conversion, all your graphics are extracted by
Word97 and converted to .gif files.
Oh, thank you Word.
3. Make a new word document and insert each .gif, then put a Figure
caption with the filename.gif beneath it for later use.
4.. Remove--one by one--each graphic and re-insert the .gif in place of
it.
Reduces the file size by up to 80%.
If you need to do anything else to the graphic, do it to the .tif or
whatever format it was in prior to conversion, then convert it again to
a .gif (gifs don't like to be changed; they lose some resolution in the
change).
By the way, I'm not sure about 97 because haven't tried it with that
version, but Win6 doesn't like files larger than about 35 meg. It fails
with a message, "File too large. Delete some text and try again."
Hope this helps.
