One advantage is that a linked graphic can be changed outside of the
word processor and updated without having to delete and re-insert.

Another advantage is for different versions of the same graphic.
Suppose that there are two versions of the dialog boxes. With linking
the different versions can be saved in separate directories under the
same filenames. To switch versions, the directories in the links could
be changed through a search-and-replace and then updated. If the
graphics were imbedded, they would have to relinked individually or
duplicate documents would need to exist.
