I agree. It's abominable.

What I meant to add, in my previous post about Trollope, was that the standards in English aren't relaxing at all, but tightening -- at least in the sense that we lax and decadent moderns seem to be more careful about rules such as number agreement than our upstanding forefathers -- er, forebeing were.

Golly, Shakespeare deserved raps on the knuckles for his sloppiness!
