I have a work around.
Insert a bookmark on the last page of your document. (I call this bookmark
LastPage).
Open the Footer and place your cursor where you want the total number of pages
to be.
Insert a PAGEREF field pointing to the bookmark (In the 'Links and References'
field category).
add the bookmark switch (LastPage) and formatting (arabic or roman numerals).
The field will look like this: {PAGEREF LastPage \*Arabic \*MERGEFORMAT }.
Word 97 seems to delete this bookmark on a whim so you will still need to check
that it is there, and also to update the field (which doesn't seem to happen
when it automatically updates other fields - sometimes).... Go figure.
For distribution purposes you might want to add an AutoOpen macro which will
ensure that these checks are made every time your document is opened.
Hopefully of help.
