I had asked for proofreading tips as many of you know. What you didn't
know was that within a half an hour I had over 20 replys!

I tried to figure out a simple way of thanking those who contributed
personally, but I'm not that facile with my new Netscape yet...so, I
hope you all won't mind a generic thanks.

Thanks.

I imagine that I'll be inundated by the time the digest subscribers get
this. You send your proofreading tips, I'll copy and paste and return
what promises to be a record-breaking long post, which I hope will
nonetheless be appreciated. Also, so you know, I'm NOT going to
proofread all the tips when I pass them along...and I've given up on
trying to extract bullet points from them...although many fit this
format...some tips require more of a prosaic explanation.

Among the highlights and familiar refrains so far:

Print it out and review it in hardcopy
Keep a list of the types of errors those you frequently edit make
Put it down and come back to it
Don't do proofing under flourescent light...it adds eye strain
Use a partner to read figures while you validate
Proof with different "screens"--once for misspelling, once for
grammar, for content, etc.
Use a sheet to block all but one line...or use a finger on each word

I could go on and on, but for now you'll have to wait for the full list
anon!

Thanks again.

Doug Max
