Anonymous: Some people are telling you that you may have chosen the wrong
career. Chances are you're in the right profession, but you may be in the
wrong job. I have finally learned that I can't work in a position in which
I'm the lone tech writer. I also know that a fast pace and lots of
deadlines fit my personality better.
Read Jane Bergen's posting. Write down your answers to her questions.
Envision the perfect technical writing job, and write down your thoughts.
Turn these thoughts into a goal and then look for the job that lives in
your imagination.
Like I wrote in a previous posting, you are not alone. Besides myself, I
have two friends that dealt with the isolation issue. One person now works
for Andersen Consulting and loves it. In the last two and a half years, she
has worked on four different assignments. Currently, she is on assignment
in New York City. Andersen set her up in an apartment in Greenwich Village
(what a life!), which she shares with another Andersen employee. She works
in Andersen's PeopleSoft Solution division, is making extremely good money,
and is acquiring a plethora of skills.
The other writer got a job with a translation firm. She's the only writer
but has a number of non-writing job duties. Because of this, she works on
different projects every week and is thriving on the variety.
There is hope, but the only way you are going to make things happen is by
taking action.
