I would suspect that the line before the line you're referencing has the same
style assigned to it, so Word considers the line break part of the whole
reference. Changing the style of the preceding line should solve the problem.

Another nastier problem (if you're in Word 97) is that the cross-references
sometimes just plain disappear. I DON'T know a way around that one.
