Hi folks,

There was an interesting article in the Globe and Mail,
one of Canada's national newspapers, that got me
thinking about how easy it is to lose your job because
of an injury or extended illness. The title of the article
was "When illness is a colleague" (Feb. 9, 1999).

- Has anyone on the list lost their job because of an
injury (RSI, or a traumatic arm-wrist-hand injury) or
prolonged illness?

- Why did your employer decide to lay you off or fire you?

- Did your medical insurance or another fund provide
enough income for you to fully recover? Or did you
feel that you had to go back to work before you were
fully healed?

- Were you discriminated against when you re-entered
the job market? For example, did any employers say
that they were hesitant to hire you because of your
injury/illness?

There are a lot of issues here for tech writers, and esp.
contract tech writers. I don't know if anyone else is
interested in this topic. It has certainly made me think
twice about, say, participating in a sport that would
put me in danger of breaking my wrist or some other
money making part of my "writing anatomy".

Cheers, Rowena
