Generally, the practice has resulted in me being
called back for further interviews, and/or being hired. At very
least, my boot-lickiing</snip>

and I sez:

I don't know about anybody else, but I've always believed that sending a
brief follow-up note (ridiculously easy with e-mail) is just common
courtesy, or basic "business decorum." I'm only 31 years old, so I'm not
exactly "old-fashioned," but it has never occurred to me *not* to send one.

Notice I said *brief* follow-up note, however. I don't necessarily
"thank" the interviewer for their time (after all it was my time too!)
but I do mention something to the effect that it "was a pleasure to meet
with you and to learn more about XYZ company ..." and then go on
to maybe hit upon one or two of the main points of the interview.
No big deal, just a paragraph. No "boot-licking" involved.

While I certainly don't think sending thank you letters has gotten me jobs,
I have had several occasions in the past where employers remarked that they
"really appreciated it" and that it made me
"stand out." BTW, if a prospective employer is going to freak because I send
a little follow-up e-mail, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway.

Going back under,
C.
