One way is to use a small color swatch as an image and simply define it to the
size you want. Take a 9-pixel or so single-color image (3x3) and use the height
and width attributes of the image tag to make it the right size for what you're
doing.

(single-pixel images are possible, but can cause problems depending upon the
size of the rule you're wanting to draw)
