Beth Friedman <bjf -at- wavefront -dot- com> writes about her concerns about a
salary offer. She mentions that the STC 1999 salary survey seemed low
to her.

You must keep in mind that the STC salary survey, although it breaks
down salaries by age, experience, location, etc. does not break down
salaries by the type of technical communications you do - except that it
explicitly is for salaried employees and not contract.

I remember that shortly after the salary survey came out, I got together
with about a group of technical writers. Some people said they were
earning less than the survey indicated, others said they were earning
more, and a few felt represented by the survey. I did find that people
who were writing to a more technical audience (e.g., writing documents
to be used by I.T. departments or programmers) seemed to command a
higher salary.
