To the list of Notepad alternatives, I'll add EditPad. I've been using the
free version (now called EditPad Classic) for years. It's "postcardware"
("If you like it (use it), you have to send a postcard to the author.") and
is still available, but no longer maintained/improved. Its successor is
EditPad Lite, which is anything but.
In either the Classic or Lite version, you can open any number of files of
any size. Each appears on its own tab in the window. You can find/replace
across all open files, convert tabs to spaces and vice versa, change case,
etc.
The $40 EditPad Pro is a full-featured programmer's editor, with syntax
coloring (built in and custom), hex editor, comment block function, diff
function, spell check, sort, etc.
Interfaces are sometimes a matter of taste, but I'm really fond of
EditPad's, and I recommend checking it out at:
The links for the Lite and Classic versions are near the bottom of the left
navigation column.
