I'm in the process of getting a clearance, and had to agree to a credit check..
That's the least of my worries, since I also get a polygraph. The way it was
explained to me is that the government wants to know if I have any reasons
why I might give information to the wrong people, and having lots of debt is
one of those reasons.

On a side note, you can now check your own credit report online; I signed up
for a year of being able to check my credit and FICO score on demand for about $90.
I have excellent credit, so I'm hoping that helps with the clearance..though I do have
a bunch of debt, but it's all related to my email address (grad school student loans).

In the 80s I worked for Georgia Tech Research Institute; we worked
on defense contracts for MICOM. Once a year we were given a "pep
talk" by GTRI's director of security on how to lessen our chances of
becoming a target for espionage. Among those risk factors were
substance abuse and financial difficulties. When I got my security
clearance, they did a background check, but I don't think they did a
credit check.
