You have pointed out several valid reasons for credit checks. Consider though that unsecured debt is, by itself, not that terrible. What about the new doctor who has over $300,000 in unsecured debt.
That person is unlikely to be applying for the $30-per-hour job at an electronics company or a software publisher or a bank.
Or consider the possible assets beyond the unsecured debt.
Those would be evident in the credit check data.
