If you're really into gaming the situation, when you hear an offer, repeat the figure - then say nothing for about thirty seconds or more. When you finally say something, remark that it seems a little low, or else ask what chance there is for increases in the first year. You may find that you can get a better offer. But you need nerves of steel and other bodily parts of brass to do something like this.
